Cemetery Compliance Guide

Cemetery Regulations

Every cemetery in New Jersey maintains its own set of rules governing marker size, material, surface finish, installation method, and sometimes even inscription content. Public municipal cemeteries, private family grounds, denominational cemeteries, and veterans' sections each operate under different frameworks. NJ Cemetery Markers's first step in every project is to request and review the receiving cemetery's current marker policy. We confirm what is permitted for flat markers, flush markers, and upright styles, so your cemetery marker is designed to comply before a single piece of granite or bronze is cut.

Foundation Requirements

Most New Jersey cemeteries require cemetery markers to be set on a concrete foundation — typically poured at a depth that reaches below the frost line — to prevent frost heave and settling over time. The dimensions of this foundation vary by cemetery and marker size. NJ Cemetery Markers's installation team prepares and pours foundations to the cemetery's specified requirements and installs the marker level on the prepared base. Families should not need to arrange separate foundation contractors; our team handles the complete installation from concrete work through final placement.

Religious Cemetery Considerations

Faith-affiliated cemeteries in New Jersey — including Catholic grounds, Jewish cemeteries, and Eastern Orthodox burial grounds across Essex, Morris, and Bergen Counties — often carry requirements that reflect the traditions of the congregation or institution that maintains them. These may include restrictions on imagery, limits on marker height, conventions around the use of religious symbols, or guidelines about how names and dates are formatted. Our team is familiar with the practices at many of New Jersey's denominational cemeteries and will verify requirements directly with the relevant cemetery office before finalizing your design.

Cemetery Marker

A cemetery marker, as distinct from an upright headstone, is a low-profile memorial — typically flush with grade or only slightly raised — intended for flat-grave sections of a cemetery. At NJ Cemetery Markers, cemetery markers are available in both granite and bronze, and in bronze-on-granite combination styles that pair the weight and color of polished stone with the detail-capturing quality of cast bronze. Granite markers are hand-carved in our Morris County workshop using American-made granite in black, gray, pink, and red varieties. Bronze markers are cast from American-made alloy and hand-finished by our artisans before installation. Each style has advantages depending on the cemetery's requirements, the family's aesthetic preferences, and the inscription complexity. Flat and flush markers satisfy the grade-level requirements at many New Jersey cemeteries. Pillow markers — which have a slightly rounded top surface — are a traditional option common in older New Jersey cemeteries where cemetery boards permit them. As veteran and military marker specialists, NJ Cemetery Markers also produces companion markers for veterans interred with VA-provided government markers, allowing families to add personal and spousal inscriptions in the style of their choice.

Granite Options

Granite is the primary material for most cemetery markers NJ Cemetery Markers produces. It is dense, weather-resistant, and available in a range of colors that suit different aesthetic and cemetery-regulation contexts. Absolute Black granite — the most widely requested — creates strong contrast with sandblasted or hand-carved lettering, making inscriptions readable from a distance. Silver Gray and Balmoral Red are popular alternatives that carry a warmer tone. All granite used by NJ Cemetery Markers is American-made, quarried domestically and processed without compromise on material quality. Marker thickness and edge profiles are fabricated to the cemetery's specifications, and the top face receives a mirror polish unless a thermal or sawn finish is specifically required.

Custom Design Process

NJ Cemetery Markers's cemetery marker design process is personal and transparent. Families meet with a designer at our Morris County showroom, or consult by phone in English, Russian, or Polish, to work through inscription text, imagery choices, layout, and material preferences. Our team then produces a scaled design proof for review and approval. No fabrication begins until the family has confirmed the design is correct. Once approved, the marker is hand-carved or hand-finished in our workshop, delivered to the cemetery, and installed by our own team with all cemetery compliance requirements satisfied. The family's point of contact remains the same throughout the entire process.

Our Process

Our Hand-Carving Process

Step one is the consultation. Families meet with our designers in person at our Morris County, NJ showroom or speak by phone in English, Russian, or Polish, sharing what they want to commemorate and any cemetery requirements they have already gathered. Step two is cemetery verification. We contact the cemetery office and review their current marker policy — covering permitted materials, dimensions, foundation specifications, and any religious or administrative requirements — before beginning design. Step three is the design proof. Our team prepares a scaled drawing showing the inscription, imagery, and layout. The family reviews and approves this proof; no fabrication begins until they confirm it is right. Step four is fabrication. The approved marker is hand-carved from American-made granite in our Morris County workshop, or cast in American-made bronze and hand-finished by our artisans — depending on the material selected. Step five is quality review. The completed marker is inspected against the approved design drawing, confirming that dimensions, lettering, and imagery all meet the standard we have maintained for over 80 years. Step six is installation. Our team delivers the marker to the cemetery, prepares the concrete foundation to the specified depth, and installs the marker level and compliant with the cemetery's requirements.

What Families Say

New Jersey families have entrusted us with their memorials for three generations.

“The team knew the requirements at the cemetery before we even had to ask. Everything was handled — the foundation, the paperwork, the placement. We were grateful not to have to manage those details ourselves.” — Aleksander, Somerset County NJ
Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

If you do not see your question here, call us.

How long does it take to design and install a grave markers?

From consultation to installation, most cemetery markers are completed in eight to twelve weeks. Simple flat granite markers with standard inscriptions often reach the shorter end of that range. Markers with portrait etchings, ornate borders, or multiple-language inscriptions require additional hand-finishing time. We provide a specific project timeline at the outset of each commission.

Do you serve cemeteries throughout New Jersey?

Yes. NJ Cemetery Markers installs cemetery markers at grounds in all 14 New Jersey counties. Our team handles all cemetery coordination and installation logistics directly, so families do not need to manage those steps independently.

Are your memorials cemetery-compliant?

Yes. Our process begins with reviewing the specific marker requirements of the receiving cemetery. We confirm permitted materials, dimensions, foundation requirements, and any special conditions — including those at denominational cemeteries — before fabrication begins. Every marker we deliver is designed and built to comply with the cemetery's current policy.

Can I bring my own design or photo?

Yes. NJ Cemetery Markers works with portrait photographs, family crests, religious symbols, military insignia, and custom decorative designs. We produce a scaled proof incorporating your imagery for review before any carving or casting begins.

Do you offer veteran companion markers?

Yes. As veteran and military marker specialists, we produce companion markers for veterans whose graves are marked by VA-provided government headstones. These private markers can carry a spouse's name, a personal inscription, or branch-of-service imagery beyond the standard VA design, and are sized to complement the official marker.

What languages do you serve families in?

Yes — English, Russian, and Polish.
